J. Zachary Bickel is the managing partner of The Robertson Law Group assisting clients in all phases of litigation at trial and on appeal by identifying, protecting, and preserving legal issues in civil litigation in state and federal courts. Zach centers his practice on researching and drafting pleadings for trial in conjunction with trial counsel, assisting in the drafting of jury instructions for trial, attending and arguing at pre-trial conferences and trial as embedded appellate counsel, drafting post-trial motions and presenting appellate writs, briefs, and oral arguments to the higher courts on appeal. Zach has worked on numerous complex, multi-million dollar cases at trial and on appeal with total verdicts well in excess of $500,000,000.
Zach was recently named to the Missouri Lawyers Weekly Power 30 Appellate Lawyers in the state; has been awarded Missouri “Up & Coming Lawyer” by Missouri Lawyers Weekly; voted by his peers multiple times to be a Super Lawyer in Missouri and Kansas; voted by his peers to be included in Kansas City Business Journal’s “Best of the Bar” multiple years; and inducted as one of the youngest Fellows of The Missouri Bar Foundation.
For multiple years, Zach was appointed and served the Missouri Bar Presidents as Chair of the Missouri Bar’s largest committee, Civil Practice and Procedure. He was also appointed by The Missouri Supreme Court to the Ad Hoc Committee to Study Court Costs in Missouri, and was previously elected by The Missouri Bar Board of Governors to serve on the Judicial Performance Evaluation Committee for Appellate Courts before its reorganization.
As appellate counsel, Zach has a wide range of litigation and appellate experience in defending corporations and insurers. Zach has worked on defending his clients in numerous complex areas of law including, commercial defense, medical malpractice, pharmaceutical and medical products liability, class action, trucking, railroad, wrongful death/personal injury tort defense, products liability, construction and real estate litigation, corporate liability defense, and insurance coverage liability and bad faith, among others. Whatever the issue in the case, Zach brings dedication, focused determination, and strategic knowledge to his practice.
Recognition
Missouri Lawyers Weekly has also recognized Zach as one of the Power 30 Appellate Attorneys in the State of Missouri for his work on important high value and complex legal issues on appeal.
Zach was awarded the Up & Coming Lawyer in Missouri distinction. This award honors lawyers who have achieved extraordinary positions of leadership and success in their practice.
Missouri & Kansas Super Lawyers also has recognized Zach as an Appellate Law “Rising Star” and “Super Lawyer” multiple years running. This peer-nominated and peer-reviewed distinction recognizes the best attorneys with no more than 2.5% of the applicable lawyers in the combined states of Missouri and Kansas included.
Zach was appointed by The Missouri Bar President for multiple years to serve as Chair of the Missouri Bar’s largest committee, Civil Practice and Procedure.
Zach was elected by The Missouri Bar Board of Governors to serve on the Judicial Performance Evaluation Committee for Appellate Courts before its reorganization. This committee serves to evaluate and recommend Supreme Court Judges and Intermediate Appellate Court Judges who seek retention on the bench under the Missouri Non-Partisan Court Plan.
Zach has served on The Missouri Supreme Court to the Ad Hoc Committee to Study Court Costs in Missouri. This committee was tasked with clarifying the existing state of the law regarding court costs, fees, and surcharges.
Zach was also awarded Kansas City’s Best of the Bar for Appellate Practice for multiple years. An award bestowed on Kansas City area lawyers who excel in their respective fields of practice.
Zach was one of two Kansas City attorneys inducted into the Missouri Bar Leadership Academy, a highly selective group comprised of 13 lawyers from across the state that are prepared to assume future leadership roles within The Missouri Bar.
Service
Zach has served as Board Chairman of the Board of Directors of Jackson County CASA, Missouri’s largest CASA organization. CASA, which stands for Court Appointed Special Advocate, serves the needs of children in abuse and neglect cases giving them a voice in court. During his tenure as Board Chairman, Zach helped to lead Jackson County CASA to a record-breaking fundraising year, allowing CASA to serve more children in need. He currently serves on the steering committee for CASA’s Kansas City Chiefs Charity Game.
Zach continues his philanthropy by currently serving as Vice Chairman of the Board of Director for MOCSA (Metropolitan Organization to Counter Sexual Assault), which exists to improve the lives of those impacted by sexual abuse and assault and to prevent sexual violence in our community. Zach is also Chair of the building committee for MOCSA’s new multi-million dollar headquarter renovation, which will aim to serve more even more survivors of sexual assault.
Zach has also served on the Finance Committee for Special Olympics of Missouri, and served as a Board of Director for Studios Inc., an arts incubator for mid-career artists.
Zach is a member of The Missouri Bar, The Missouri Bar Civil Practice and Procedure Committee, a sustaining member of the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association (KCMBA), KCMBA Appellate Committee member, Missouri Organization of Defense Lawyers member, Defense Research Institute member, and Fellow of The Missouri Bar Foundation.
